 In the OAV series, Ryoko was a demon. She was locked up in a cave for 700 series until Tenchi came and released her. What happened was Tenchi wanted to explore the cave. He sneaked into his grand- father's shrine to get the keys for the cave. After trying to get the keys from his grandfather, Tenchi went to the cave. He explored it and found a sword. As he crept further into the cave, he stepped on a stone which made the floor turn downwards and Tenchi slid into the place where Ryoko was kept in. He went to check out the the tomb, but then as he was about to leave all of a sudden, Ryoko grabbed him by the wrist. He turned around frightened to face Ryoko. At this time, she didn't look like her normal self and looked more like a mummy. She got face to face with Tenchi and she reached up and touched his face with her hand. The sword Tenchi had somehow shocked Ryoko away and Tenchi ran out of the cave as fast as his legs could take him. This is how Ryoko was released from the cave. The reason why Ryoko was locked up in the first place was because of Yosho. Ryoko was on a planet called Jurai. She went on a rampage and started destroying everything in sight. Yosho was the crown prince of Jurai, as well as Tenchi's grandfather. He went and fought Ryoko in outer space. They fought on spaceships. They fought until somehow they crashed onto Earth. Yosho and Ryoko kept on fighting. Yosho had thrusted his sword into Ryoko's neck. Ryoko had her arms out, trying to grab Yosho, but it was too late. The sword had taken away Ryoko's gems, which are the source of her power. After that, Yosho locked her up in the cave to make sure she will never be a harm to anyone again. In the Tenchi Universe series, things were quite different. First of all, Ryoko wasn't a demon. She was known across the universe as the most wanted criminal. She was a space pirate. Here's how we're introduced to her: Ryoko was being chased through space by some robot type thing. They both crashed onto Earth. Tenchi is walking home from school at this time. He sees Ryoko's spaceship, Ryho-oki, crash and he goes to check it out. He finds Ryoko laying on the ground, unconscious. Tenchi lifts her up and pours some water into her mouth to revive her. She awakens and tells Tenchi what's going on. Soon, they are both being chased by the robot thing and who Ryoko claims as the space pirate. Ryoko and Tenchi reach the end of a cliff. Ryoko goes on about how she Tenchi made a vow to die together. The robot thing is still moving towards them and it falls off the cliff. Ryoko follows Tenchi back to his house. Later, the robot thing finds them at Tenchi's house and continues to chase them. Tenchi and Ryoko keep running until they reach Tenchi's grandfather's shrine. Tenchi's grandfather uses a wooden stick and he hits the robot thing and it breaks. Tenchi and Ryoko see that it really wasn't a space pirate, but detective first class Mihoshi. Mihoshi reveals that Ryoko is the space pirate. Ryoko laughs evilly and she starts chasing Tenchi and Mihoshi until they get to Tenchi's house. It looks as though Ryoko is going to kill them, but then Tenchi goes to face Ryoko. Ryoko is in bit of shock to see Tenchi actually going her. She looks into Tenchi's eyes and sees determination and bravery. She decides not to kill them and it appears that she had been joking the whole time. After this, Ryoko decides to live with Tenchi. He isn't really happy with the idea, but he lets her stay, as well as Mihoshi. When people think of Ryoko, they think of a rude, greedy, cold- hearted, rotten liar, but I looked past these flaws. She's basically not as as bad as people think she is. She does have a heart and feelings. Ryoko seems to not care about a lot of people, but she does care about Tenchi. To put it plainly, Ryoko is in love with Tenchi. To know more about this go to the Ryoko and Tenchi page. One thing I like about Ryoko is that she knows how to have fun. In the Tenchi Universe series, in the episode, "No Need for Hunger", Ryoko has eaten everything in the house. Then she has to go out and buy some more food for the various people living at the house (which are, by the way, Ayeka, the crown princess of Jurai, Sasami, Ayeka's little sister, Washu, the greatest scientific genius in the universe, detective first class Mihoshi of the Galaxy Police, her partner Kiyone, Tenchi, his father, Noboyuki, and his grandfather, Katsuhito). Well, you know what Ryoko did after Ayeka had given her money to buy more food? Ok, she went out and got drunk, gambled (and won by the way), went to some of the best restuarants and ate some gourmet meals, and finally she went out to the beach to get a tan. And after all this, of course, she Ryoko ran out of money. And so being a space pirate, Ryoko went out and robbed a bank. But the point is that she had fun and enjoyed herself. Another thing I like about Ryoko is that she's not afraid to ex- press herself. Whether it be anger or happiness. Mostly, it's anger. She's also not afraid to show how she feels about Tenchi. It seems as though Ryoko hates Ayeka, but she only dislikes her. This is true because she risked her life for her in the OAV episode 6, "We Need Tenchi". Ayeka was down and Kagato was blasting at her. Ryoko dived down and saved Ayeka from the blast. If Ryoko truly hated Ayeka then she would not have saved her. But you know what, Ayeka never even thanked her. |
